Studies looking at people who have their hair dyed have not found a consistent increase in bladder cancer risk.

Your Hair is Your Second Face: My 5-Step Guide to Healthy, Youthful Hair

I’ve always believed that hair, even more than hands, is a woman’s "second face." Because your hair and face are seen together instantly, the condition of your hair directly impacts your overall look. Here is my personal routine for maintaining healthy, voluminous hair.

1. Shampoo and Conditioner

Healthy hair must be both clean and well-nourished. My hair care routine has become increasingly minimalist; I now opt for products that are either fully organic or nearly all-organic. The user experience is much better—as long as there are no "junk" chemical ingredients, I find I experience much less hair loss.

The top 5 most harmful chemical ingredients in shampoo are:

  • Sulfates (e.g., SLS / SLES): These strip away too much natural oil, leaving hair dehydrated and straw-like.

  • Silicones (e.g., Dimethicone): These create a "fake" smoothness while actually clogging pores.

  • Betaines (e.g., Cocamidopropyl Betaine): A synthetic surfactant that can cause allergic reactions in some people.

  • Preservatives (e.g., Parabens): Some studies suggest they may disrupt the endocrine system and trigger scalp sensitivity or allergies.

  • Sodium Chloride: This acts as a drying agent, leaving both the scalp and hair feeling parched.

My Recommended Brands

I’ve used several well-known organic shampoos, including the Organic Beauty series, 100% Pure, and Ingreendients. For more budget-friendly options, I’ve tried Plantanicals and Carina Organics. In the past, I also used Super Nature (which is usually $4–$5 cheaper during Costco sales), California Naturals, and Acure. They all feel great—the most important thing is that they don't cause hair loss.

Tips: Since these "clean" hair care products have removed harsh surfactants, you might occasionally feel like your hair isn't being washed thoroughly or that it feels a bit coarse and rough while washing. A simple fix is to apply a small amount of organic conditioner before your final rinse, and your hair will feel smooth again.

2. In addition to using the healthy shampoo and conditioner mentioned above, I’ve started using a filtered shower head. Since the water here is so hard, it’s actually a much bigger culprit for hair loss than the products themselves. Check out my post on shower heads for more details:

3. Managing Gray Hair: Looking Young Effortlessly

For us Asians, white hairs mixed into dark hair can significantly age our appearance, even if our skin still looks youthful. However, if it's being triggered by age or stress, you can definitely slow the process or see some improvement by cleaning up your daily routine and boosting your intake of Vitamin B complex (see below).

My gray hair is largely genetic, and unfortunately, eating black sesame seeds never worked for me. I finally found Naturtint 3N (very natural soft black).

  • Why I like it: The ingredients are safer than traditional dyes, there is no harsh chemical smell, and it provides great coverage until the new roots grow in. Plus, you can mix only the amount you need for touch-ups.

  • A Note on "Permanent" Dye: Any dye that claims to be permanent must have some chemical components to lock in the color. I tried Henna several times, but it failed to color effectively and faded too fast.

  • Quick Fix: To extend the time between full colorings, I use a hair root touch-up powder to quickly cover the temples and crown. I’ve tried so many different kinds, but I still think powders work best. A lot of the others are so sticky and greasy, they make my scalp feel uncomfortable.

Deconstructing Hair Dye

Nowadays, many hair dyes claim to be "Ammonia-free," which makes them appear very healthy, but that isn't actually the case. If a hair dye is to be a permanent hair color, it must contain either Ammonia or Ethanolamine; only these two components can open the hair cuticles to allow the color to be applied permanently.

Both are corrosive and bad for the hair, but permanent hair color won't last without them. Ammonia has a very sharp, pungent smell, while Ethanolamine is odorless. If it is a semi or demi-permanent hair color, which provides partial or temporary coloring, then these two ingredients are not needed. While the formula becomes healthier, it can no longer provide lasting color. For example, 100% pure Henna will lose its color after just a few washes.

I have used Naturtint hair dye for many years. It contains Ethanolamine and does not advertise itself as fully organic or natural; it simply contains more natural ingredients. It is my favorite among the many products I have tried because it isn't pungent and leaves the hair shiny after dyeing. Many people on Amazon feel the same way I do, though of course, there are some negative reviews; you have to try it yourself to see if it suits you.

Can frequent hair dyeing cause cancer?

(For context, I dye my hair once a month and use touch-up products to cover the roots in between). According to research from cancer health associations, no link has been found between the two: "Studies looking at people who have their hair dyed have not found a consistent increase in bladder cancer risk."

4. Vitamin B-Complex: Fighting Stress and Graying

Stress accelerates gray hair. Vitamin B-Complex is well-known for regulating stress. My husband takes it too! Specifically, look for formulas containing Aminobenzoic Acid (PABA), which is sometimes used by doctors to treat premature graying.

  • The Biotin Check: Not all B-complexes are created equal. Many lack enough Biotin, forcing you to take an extra supplement. I look for a B-complex that contains at least 300mcg of Biotin to ensure it’s actually supporting hair growth.

5. Volume & Frizz Control: The "Blow-Dry" Secret

Healthy hair should have "volume" and movement. Here is my secret hack:

  • The Upside-Down Blowout: When I wash my hair at night, I blow-dry it completely with the hairdryer pointing down while my head is upside down. It might look like a "lion's mane" immediately after, but don't worry!

  • The Sleep Trick: Sleep with your hair spread out above your head on the pillow so you don't crush the roots. The next day, your hair will be airy and well-defined.

  • The Day-Two Fix: If I don’t wash my hair, the roots tend to go flat. I use a little root volume spray and a ceramic round hairbrush with some heat to curl the ends inward and refresh the lift.
